Vauxhall Astra meta review - the spacious coupe

Vauxhall Astra meta review - the spacious coupe

Don't be fooled by the new Vauxhall Astra GTC. It is a coupe like no other. Instead of being simply a 3 door edition of our popular family hatchback, the exterior of the GTC has been redesigned from scratch. With every panel newly moulded to take advantage of some sport-focussed adjustments, the only similarities to the Astra are the door handles and aerial.

Designing a car that honours its heritage whilst taking it several steps further, is a challenge for many companies. However Vauxhall have shown that the Astra GTC is so much more than your average sleek coupe whilst retaining the quality expected from a Vauxhall Astra

Released recently, the Astra GTC is available to test now at Charters of Camberley. It is one thing to read about this desirable car but a completely different thing to experience it yourself. We urge you to try the GTC for yourself and to share your opinion with us

What follows is a metareview of the Astra GTC to establish what the UK media think of this incredible sports coupe. Noted critics will be balanced together to gain a picture of how the Astra GTC will change your perspective on this incredible car.

carbuyer review of the astra gtc
Carbuyer tested the Astra GTC recently and found that despite being a sports coupe, there was ample room for 2 adults in the rear (and even space for one more when required). The Astra GTC has a longer wheelbase which allows for comfortable legroom along with headroom for the unfortunate ones not lucky enough to be driving it. The new body panels of the Astra GTC improves upon an already sleek design and give it a permanently "in-motion" feel. Despite being a sports car, the GTC actually retains a sense of practicality (unheard of in this class). Stylish and well built, the Astra GTC comes with a choice of engines but their advice was to opt for the 140 1.4 litre petrol model as it gives the "best balance of performance and economy". The GTC handles extremely well due to new front suspension. It is lower and wider than the standard Astra which means it can go "round corners at alarming speeds" without losing any grip. Not only is it cheaper than the Volkswagen Scirocco but also a great deal more practical. With an impressive dashboard which is well-made and designed, the Astra GTC's interior is just as beautiful as its exterior.

autocar review of the astra gtc
Autocar reveal that the Astra GTC is "much more than a three door Astra". They were impressed with the sophisticated front suspension setup which is only seen in much higher category Vauxhalls (such as the Insignia VXR). The Astra GTC (they claim) has a "highly developed feel". In tour mode it is refined and easy to drive, whilst sports mode provides a firmer ride along with sport tweaks that are required when driving with more vigour. Ultimately, the claim that the GTC is "more engaging and entertaining that its competitors".

auto trader review of the astra gtc
Autotrader also note how the GTC is a "surprisingly spacious five seat hatchback with attractive coupe looks". They focus on how the steering and suspension has been developed specifically for British buyers to ensure a good drive...every time.

fifth gear review of the astra gtc
Fifth Gear simply state: "A big chunk of surprise has rolled out of Luton. Thankfully it's the good kind. Combining stunning looks, cracking handling and some neat interior touches, the Vauxhall Astra GTC is a Griffin, Jim, but not as we know it." The GTC steers with noticeably more feel and precision than that of its rivals and rides very well.

whatcar review of the astra gtc
WhatCar? drove the Astra GTC and exclaimed "the GTC feels more eager and darty than the comfort-oriented five-door Astra". "The GTC has a lot more going for it than just its looks. It's decent to drive, more practical than most of its rivals and is great value for money – especially when you take into account the generous kit list..."

The Astra GTC is much more than a five door hatchback; much more than any other 3-door coupe and leaps and bounds ahead of any steering and handling technology available on the market. The precision in driving an Astra GTC can only be found...in an Astra GTC. Drive one for yourself and discover how much car you can get for such a low asking price.
