Peugeot 508 HDi still impresses after 56000 miles of rigorous testing
Most vehicle reviews are based on a brand new example. As a consumer this may not be the ideal write-up as this does not give an accurate representation of how the car (or van) will be after many miles usage.
For all of us there are important questions that cannot be answered by a critic reviewing a brand new car. Will the miles per gallon (mpg) still remain consistent after the 50,000 mark? Will the interior wear away to indicate its age?
The Fleet News has recently tried to focus on how the Peugeot 508 ages. Using a car that had been driven approximately 56,000 miles along with a further 400, racked up by driving from Paris to Coventry, they established that the Peugeot 1.6 e-HDi still retained an impressive 60mpg.
Not only that but the vehicle (at the PSA facility) had undergone "arduous testing" to realistically simulate regular usage. This included simulated hill climbs along with extreme weather variations, rough road driving and of course motorway journeys.
In their informative review they found that there were no unexpected rattles, the interior was as sumptuous as it had been coming off the production line and start-stop driving was as smooth as ever. In fact they found the only indication that the car had seen regular, realistic use was a "smoothness in the leather on the steering wheel at 10-to-two". However they noted that this "smoothness" matched the smooth 1.6 litre diesel engine which ran as refined as it did when first new.
